Our first Food Community is Chinese. Although not the largest Food Community in Maryland, it's hard to go wrong when dealing with anything that combines China and food in the same sentence.

Believe it or not, Chinese cuisine was not my first choice to start this blog. It's my favorite food by far and the one that I know best, yet I didn't consider it to start off with.

There are certainly pockets of Chinese food and Chinese communities here in Maryland – Rockville and Columbia to be exact. My grandfather was one of the architects of Baltimore Chinatown, so I knew there was a story about immigration and adaption to be told. Lastly, through my time working and traveling in China, I had become very well accustomed to the traditional cuisine – I grew to love the variety and flavors that extended far beyond the Chinese food with which I had grown up. Not to mention my corporate sponsor specializes in China and created this blog for the expressed purposes of talking about history and cultural influence contemporary life.

In light of all this, I’m not really sure why I didn’t want to start with Chinese. Perhaps I thought it was too cliché. Perhaps I wanted to stick it to the man and thumb my nose at the corporation (a good example of self-flagellation or personality disorder – take your pick). Perhaps I was scared – didn’t want to tackle my one of my favorite subjects on my first go and mess it up.

But, I suppose, just like you always know where home is, you also know where your heart lies. And if this truly is a labor of love, then there was really only one real place to start. The food that made me in to a foodie – that convinced me that eating and cooking was something to be enjoyed as a critical component of life itself. So here we go – China it is.
